Founded in 1996, The Cedar Valley Arboretum and Botanic Gardens is a 501c3 non-profit organization located directly East of Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa. Though associated with the college, our relationship comes from their generous leasing of the Arboretum grounds to us. As a completely independent non-profit, we receive no local, state, or federal funding to be used in our operation and no financial support from the college, though we have a unique partnership to provide class space and learning opportunities for students and staff alike.
We have 2 full time staff members who work year round planning events, engaging in fundraising efforts, and promoting the mission of the Arboretum. During our season (which starts in May and ending in October) we will typically have 1-3 garden workers or interns, and over 150 volunteers that help in a variety of ways at the Arboretum including building and equipment maintenance, garden upkeep, seasonal planting, board work and much, much more. Your visit and support of the Arboretum helps us to continue fufilling our mission and make a difference in the way people view and enjoy the environment.
The mission of the Cedar Valley Arboretum & Botanic Gardens is to enhance the quality of life for all individuals through horticulture. We seek to enrich life by nourishing and sharing the beauty of the natural world, the joy of gardening, knowledge of plants, and the diversity of our world.
The vision of the Cedar Valley Arboretum & Botanic Gardens is to serve as a compelling public resource for the study of plants, a leader in environmental stewardship, a cultural center for the community, and a showcase of Iowa's rich heritage with the land.
We would love for you to come visit us and see what we have to offer!
