Seasonal Gardener Position

Position description:

The Cedar Valley Arboretum & Botanic Gardens is hiring one (1) seasonal gardener for our 2017 season.  We are looking for individuals who are hard-working, friendly, and love to be outside.  90-95% of work time will be spent outdoors, rain or shine.  Applicants shouldn’t be afraid to get their hands dirty.  Seasonal gardeners will report directly to the Executive Director.    

Job Duties: 

  • Weeding various areas of the Arboretum’s 40 acres
  • Watering, often daily during the hottest parts of the season
  • Planting and transplanting various annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs
  • Working in the Welcome Center, greeting guests, on occasion
  • Working in all types of weather conditions (rain, heat, humidity, etc.)
  • Often requires lifting 50+ pounds
  • Mulching garden beds
  • Creating/maintaining the Arboretum’s trail system
  • May include driving a golf cart, tractor, mowers, or Gator
  • May include using power tools such as weed trimmers and other equipment


  • Valid Driver’s License
  • An interest and/or a passion for the outdoors/gardening
  • Applicants should be able to multitask, work alone or with a group, and be able to follow instructions
  • Applicants must be 16 years of age and older

Work Schedule: 

  • Mid-April – Mid-September
  • 20 - 35 hours/week
  • Flexible hours
  • Some nights & Weekends


  • $8/hour

Development and Communications Coordinator

Position Summary:

The Cedar Valley Arboretum & Botanic Gardens is seeking a full-time, Development & Communications Coordinator.  This entry level position is responsible for a wide variety of tasks within our organization, ranging from updating our website to planning events.  The duties of this position will be different every day of the week.  You will often be the face of the organization, answering phone calls, responding to emails, meeting with people in person, and greeting visitors to the gardens.  Applicants may visit our website at to learn more about our organization and its mission. 

Essential Duties:

  1. Events
  • Plan and implement multiple events per week during our active season (April-October)
  • Ensure that all Arboretum events are represented on our Facebook page, our website, and all local event calendars
  • Meet with volunteers to develop new, fun events for the Arboretum to offer
  1. Marketing
  • Develop social media campaigns, especially on Facebook and Instagram
  • Create all marketing documents, including social media photos, mailing pieces, t-shirts, brochures, and any other miscellaneous pieces that are needed
  • Coordinate with various event committees to develop marketing plans for each (larger) event at the Arboretum
  • Work with the Newsletter Committee to create and send out our monthly newsletter through Mailchimp
  • Coordinate with and contact local news sources to release new information about events or additions to the Arboretum
  • Update the Arboretum’s website as needed (we use as our website’s platform)
  1. Donations
  • Create (in coordination with the Executive Director) the yearly Membership, Annual Appeal and business sponsorship letters that are sent out to our mailing lists
  • Aid in general fundraising efforts
  • Effectively utilize our chosen CRM (Little Green Light) to track all incoming donations and donors
  • Track all donor relations and create lists based on specific donor profiles
  1. Volunteer Management
  • Work directly with volunteers in a variety of situations, including meetings, events, training, and orientations
  • Work with the Volunteer Engagement Committee to increase volunteer numbers, improve volunteer retention, and recognize volunteers with appreciation events and gifts
  • Send out a weekly correspondence outlining volunteer opportunities, information, and events
  1. Rental Coordination
  • Meet with potential Education Center and Wedding rental clients
  • Track rental payments, clients, and rental dates
  • Be available during (and leading up to) wedding rentals to answer all rental questions
  1. Gift Shop Management
  • Research new Gift Shop items
  • Perform a monthly Gift Shop inventory
  • Organize and maintain Gift shop displays
  1. Grants & Fundraising
  • Act as an editor for all grant correspondence after it is completed by the Executive Director
  • Aid in the research and application of new funding sources
  1. Education
  • Plan and implement educational classes, workshops, and guest speaker events
  • Schedule all field trips and act as the Arboretum’s liaison with schools and day cares
  1. Miscellaneous

The Development and Communications Director will often be asked by volunteers, Board members, or the Executive Director to complete various, misc. tasks (small and large).  The successful applicant will be able to quickly and effectively respond to change and requests. 

Required Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines with little supervision
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (we may ask for samples) 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Google Docs
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and their potential use as marketing tools
  • Familiarity with various print and electronic media and the strengths of each
  • Excellent computer skills -computer literate in a variety of different platforms
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that will include some evenings and weekends


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a nonprofit environment (volunteer or staff)
  • BA degree in Leisure, Youth, & Human Services, Marketing, or another related field
  • Proficient in Adobe Illustrator, Mailchimp, and Survey Monkey
  • Experience with donor management software
  • An interest in gardening, conservation, the outdoors, and/or any other related topic(s)


Location: Waterloo, IA

Organization: Cedar Valley Arboretum & Botanic Gardens

Type: Entry Level, Full-Time, hours and days worked varies throughout the year

Reports to: Executive Director

Wage:  $14/hour

Benefits:  PTO, 401K, flexible schedule and work environment
